Meribel

Méribel turns 80!

Should the recent arctic blast have fuelled your appetite for a trip to the slopes, no doubt you have been baffled by the myriad of options and locations available. However, choosing the perfect destination for your holiday is as much dependent on the pistes as the location, view, amenities and activities on offer. Indeed, the perfect ski resort and the perfect ski holiday seem to be a highly guarded, secret formula.

Whatever the magic ingredients are, Méribel seems to have them in abundance, and is celebrating its 80th anniversary this season. The resort has a loyal following, and is one of the most popular destinations for British skiers.

Founded by a British Colonel, Peter Lindsay in 1938, and proud co-host to the 1992 Winter Olympics, the resort’s perennial popularity is thanks not only to its extensive skiing possibilities, but also to the attractive chalet-style architecture. The area is favoured by those looking for tranquility and discretion without wanting to compromise on the ski offerings.

In the heart of the Les Allues Valley, Méribel is at the centre of the world’s largest ski area, Les Trois Vallées, offering access to over 600km of pistes and unlimited off-piste. As well as the two main resorts, Méribel and Méribel-Mottaret, the valley also includes a number of traditional villages. Holidaymakers and those looking to invest have an excellent range of properties to choose from.

If you are in Méribel this season and keen to join in the festivities, a wide range of events is on offer, including a ski show inspired by the Winter Olympics and a torchlight descent. Savills has also been involved in the celebrations, undertaking the first Savills slalom event to encourage networking between visitors, clients and some friendly competition, a perfect showcase for our enthusiasm for this wonderful location and lifestyle.

It is said that Méribel takes its name from the Latin 'mirare bellum' meaning 'the point from where the view is beautiful' and as proud advocates of Méribel, the community here and the lifestyle, we couldn’t agree more.
